I watched a few seasons of Columbo for the first time and came to the following conclusion.
It seems to me that the people who accept or reject Trump are the same people who are charmed or not charmed by Columbo. Columbo and Trump are the same persona. The same voice, strong New York accent, mannerisms, body language, gestures, facial expressions, smirks, goofy faces. These are external factors. Besides, both of them smile at their enemies, call them friends, give compliments, act like simpletons, but in reality, they calculate everything in their heads and arrive at the only correct decision. Columbo started airing in the late 1960s when Trump was still a young man. It is quite possible that he was also charmed by this image and subconsciously began to imitate it. In his manner, there is a cultural code that Columbo fans understood and approved of, while everyone else viewed it with rejection and contempt.
For example, saying that Trump loves Putin and will do anything for him is the same as accusing Columbo of hugging a murderer and saying nice things to him, which means he is in league with the criminal and a traitor. Not to mention that he is considered rude and a dimwit with a limited vocabulary. But Colombo was no one’s fool, and neither is Trump.
People from this second category are usually big snobs.
